  Scottish Open Championships 2018
by: FlyingScotsman, 15-01-2018 03:04 PM (#1)

As per the meeting yesterday it was decided to increase the Scottish Open entry fee from 5 to 10.

It was a very close vote, where some reps voted against the proposal, as per their instructions from their league members, even though these reps did in fact agree themselves on the increase.

Anyway, the finals this year will again be held in October, date/venue to be confirmed, just waiting on the World Championship date along with the Nations Cup dates/venues being confirmed, so not to clash with them.

I hope that the increase to 10 will not put off that many players entering the biggest singles event of the year for the SPA players, as if it does, then my head will fall and I would hate that to happen.

Full details asap posted on here.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a decrease in entries, simply because your average players didn't mind chucking a fiver in for the Scottish but can't see it now, hopefully most of the IM members will still play.

yeah son that was the main argument against the increase but if we never increased any event, just to keep the numbers up , what are we?

Tell you what just between me and you, I will have a bet of just 10 that the numbers go up.

A terrible decision, this should be a free event paid for by the SPA. Doubling the entry fee cant possibly be seen as encouraging participation.

Surely a smaller increase would have sufficed doubling it is asking for less numbers

Does the prize money double or increase? If not where does the money go? I'm assuming the Scottish Open is a non profit making competition

i cannot understand why that anyone would ask this question ?

Never and I say never has the prive fund for the Scottish ever been less than what is taken in as entries, in fact tons of times added prize money is there.

I want to guarantee that a prize fund of 10 k will be at this event but as others has told me if you do that then you have to pay that out and no MORE?

i have guaranteed 5 k more than once for this event and am happy to double that for 2018.

As you have now informed the membership of what the prize money will be then it was a relevant question, thank you for that, maybe this should have been released in conjuction with the change of entry fee statement as many of my team and other league players were asking this question, again I thank you for a prompt explanation.

2017 prize fund
Winner 1,500
Runner-Up 750
Semis 400
Quarters 200
L16 100
L32 50
L64 25
L128 10

2018 ???
Winner 3000
Runner up 1500
Etc
Etc
...

Will this be how it is Ross, or will it be dependant on entries?

As you will see from the list above the prize fund for 2017 was around 6890, with added prize money to the entries from the sponsorship from Belhaven.

Now as I said to Stewart on the other post, I am happy to guarantee just over the 10k as I want to make sure it kind of equals out.

So I will guarantee a prize fund of 10400.

Winner 2000
R/up 1000
semi 500
quarters 250
Last 16 125
Last 32 75
Last 64 50
Last 128 25

Now that comes to the 10400, which as I said I will guarantee to pay out for the Scottish Open, however if the entries do come in that I hope for and we get more than the above prize fund, then of course the prize fund will change to reflect the entries and any added prize money as well.

I would add that if you look at the prize fund above, I have made bigger increases to all qualifiers starting at the 128 stage and they will stay at that but any extra prize money will go onto the later stages of the event ie; winner runner up semi etc.

Can I just add one thing, the Scottish Open is just that, its the most open event the SPA do, no seeding at all, so from the very start, no one is kept away from anyone else and that is also the case for the finals.

Right now only one person is guaranteed to be at the final this year and that is the defending champion and that is why I believe that this event should have the biggest prize fund than any IM event etc.

I would love to say it would not be that date, as my own event in Catalonia would just be finishing mate but I cannot.

I should know the date of the Nations Cup/World Championships very shortly and once that is announced then I can start getting dates for not only the Scottish Open but also the Masters and Seniors , which are all booked in for October month but will have to be changed to suit the international dates.
