  2020 events
by: FlyingScotsman, 26-05-2020 10:59 AM (#1)

Nothing new to add sorry but until we know for sure when all the pubs and clubs can reopen we cannot organise qualifiers for any events that need them like the IMs, Malky Cowan, Doubles, Scottish.

We do hope that better news comes soon and we can get as many events on this year as we can.

Any questions feel free to post on here.

Hi Ross, I know it is a terrible time at the moment with everything in limbo I have a few events in the same boat, what is the SPA's plans if there is no space to get things completed this year.

Would there be a partial refund of entries or a reduction to the next series etc, has this been thought of as of yet, hopefully it won't come to that and we can get everything completed.

Right thought about that a lot kid.

We have a few options, one is to cancel the rest of the IMs and give all players their 3/4 money back, this would be a problem but one that can be done.

Next everything is oK and we play out the remaining 3 IM events.

Next we play out what we can and add on whatever to next year but inform every player that even though one or two are played in 2021 the points count for 2020 but this would mean us playing more than 4 IMs in 2021 but again still can be done.

I like option 3 to be honest if we have to go there because reps need time to run and organise play offs.

As for all other events, we have taken no money in for them, so it would mean if all went badly wrong no national titles this year, which would be a shame.

The Super 15s are already on the calendar for the last weekend in October and the 4 weekends in November but until the government and for me our players are happy to share a caravan I don't think we can say even these will go on this year.

We also may have international events that have yet to be decided is the SPA will send any teams but again we will have to wait and see on this.

I honestly donít see us being in a position to have any of the major tournaments played this year. Hope Iím wrong though.

Iíd love to say option 2 but honestly think that timings for qualifiers etc are against you, especially with the Open Singles also being a part of the ranking system. That in turn would add to the problems of option 3. Would that mean 7 IMs and 2 Open Singles in 2021? I donít think that would be possible to manage along with all the different sections.

Iíd personally go for scrapping points from 2020 IM1 and just start again next year with the rankings as at end of last year. Players that have already paid this years entry would be paying £6.25 (not top 16 which would be £18.75)
Iíd also guess that those that have paid this years £5 registration would also be marked down as paid for next year.

All the above being only if the social distancing is back to normal by end of year, which I doubt very much. You may have to look again at how tournaments are run now and dare I say it, that you may even have to revert back to using multiple venues because of the numbers.

Iíd also just scrap the results of Super 11s Premier Division. This gives a reprieve to the relegated teams and would solve multiple headaches for next year. This is not being done to spite Glasgow of their win, could always just add an asterix against their name. GrinGrin

Well thank god your only a referee Davy?

Only joking mate but you have made some really good points there but again now is not the time to make decisions, who knows what will happen in the next two months ?

Indeed, Ross. Canít tell whatís down the line with this situation. So perhaps some proposals should be getting assessed just now.
The asterix part was just a jest by the way. The win obviously counts, relegation match results should be voided.

That's already decided son, you cant relegate a team if you don't have a team to replace them and we don't.

If thereís no pool this calendar year would it not just be as easy to carry this seasons IMs and open etc to next year and not have a new IM series next season

Save you trying to squeeze in more events and Bash having to sort out rankings etc

Agree with your call that no relegation from 11s Premier

Personally I donít see option 1 of a refund as an option as thatís a lot of admin work for the SPA and the associated leagues to refund all those Payments

Do you have a date in mind of when you will decide there will be no 15s?

If there is no pool this year or if we cant do qualifiers, for me then the 3 IMs this year would be the ones only for next year.

As for a date for the Supers, a few things there, firstly we would need to know that our government say its ok to go ahead but the second thing is more important , do our players want to play Supers this year?

After everything that has went on the players/leagues have to be asked if they want them to go ahead.

This should not be even up for debate a 3/4 refund should go to every single person that paid for the IM for this season , a new schedule can be done if and when it can , no money should be carried over ,

wait and strike when the time is right

Things changing every day Renzie, to be honest I think clubs and pubs will open in Scotland in July, they may have to do lots but can see that happening and if it does then all 3 Ims will be this year.

It will be up to the Leagues to decide if they wish the Supers to go ahead later this year.

This may well be the case but even tournaments will have to change, those running them will have much more work to do.

In my opinion for a tournament the table surround and balls will need cleaned between matches as a minimum, potentially the bed also if this is possible for wear. Numbers also need to be looked at as distancing will apply therefore timings may need to be altered also for account for clubs that cannot accommodate the numbers.

Very true kid but at least the IMs have been changed to only 64 per day, this with different times really means not a lt of players there at one time,

Supporters may have to miss out as well but again it will all be streamed so people can watch.

Has there been any more thought about what to with the IMís etc? Doesnít look likely we will be in a position to play these this year.

I suspect we will know more soon once guidance is given as currently it is somewhat conflicting, Falkirk Council have apparently indicated that clubs will be in line with pubs i.e the 15th July.

but even if clubs do open are they likely to want an IM event where up to 64 player are in their premises which means that the same amount of regulars cannot attend, and I think landlords would much prefer to have their regulars in that are going to drink not to mention they would need to pay SPA for hosting the event.

Until we get more information all we are doing is guessing on things.

I have seen today that clubs can open up but they are not allowed to play on pool tables, use machines etc.

Each week its changing but you can all be assured of one thing, the SPA were the first to shut down their events and more than likely be the last to open up again, why? because the health and safety of players and supporters is what matters, pool is our game but that comes no where near what is important.

I think you are probably right, perhaps now is time for the governing body to give something back to those that have shown loyalty to them and have these events done without charge.
