Corner Pocket Tour 2010 Event 2 Report
Corner PocketDue to the open draw nature of the event you always get some interesting matches throughout the event and not just at the business end of the tournament. First match on the live stream table was a major upset when Colin Brown from Arbroath defeated Uddingstons Danny Kinney in a comprehensive 5-1 win, Scott Gillespie came out on top in his first round match against former Scotland A team player Gary Scott with a 5-3 victory. Alan Reynolds had a good comeback against Alan Martin from Dunfermline in a 9 frame thriller.

Pat Holtz (pic above) came back from the brink to beat the talented Marc Fleming from being 4-2 down. While Aldo McLeod and Paul Harkness fought out a 9 frame marathon of a match which Aldo finally came out the victor.

Second round began and the undoubted match of the round was Scott Ross versus Scott Gillespie, Scott Ross seemed back to something near his best with a very comprehensive 5-1 victory. He is not called the Bossman for nothing…

Another great matchup with Uddingstons Bert McAdam against the Flyingscotsman, Ross McInnes (pic above) which Ross eventually won 5-3 in what was always going to be a very close affair.

Scott Proud having come all the way down from Aberdeen for his first event took a big scalp in the form of Mark Armstrong and he done it very convincingly with a 5-1 win, hopefully this will lead to more of the Aberdeen boys coming down to play in Blackball events as they undoubtedly have the talent for it.

Keith Robertson is a player who has been missing from events for a while and showed he has lost none of his ability with a good 5-1 win over current SPA Top 16 player Ryan Davie. George Henderson, also having made the long trip down from Aberdeen with Scott Proud, won his first match with a 5-2 win over Rex Brady. Davy Jack, all the way down from Arbroath won a very good match with Uddingstons John Owen in a full 9 frame match.

Onto the last 32 and at least everyone is safe in the knowledge that they are at least in the prizemoney stages. Colin Brown is first out the traps with an even bigger upset than his first round match when he beat defending champion Jayson Shaw very comfortable 5-2. Aldo McLeod was involved in yet another 9 frame match but this time was on the losing end against Stephen Campbell jnr.

Scott Proud and George Henderson who had travelled down together from Aberdeen were both beaten but were unlucky to draw two of the best players in Scotland in the form of Paddy McMullen and Scott Ross respectively and hopefully they will attend events in the future.

Jamie McCutcheon was drawn against his big brother Paul as Paul ran out a 5-3 winner in what must have been an awkward game for both players. Ryan Fleming from Dundee won a very good match with Vinnie Bimendi. Martin Jones got revenge on Alan Reynolds who has beaten Martin in quite a few of these tour events in the past, but Martin was in top form this time and ran out a comfortable 5-1 winner. Alec McDowell ran out an easy winner against Chris Slack with the same scoreline.

Onto the last 16 and it’s getting to the stage where there are no easy games and so it proved, Scott Ross ended Chris Bennets involvement with a 5-2 win, Alec McDowell (pic above) made sure that Colin Brown was pulling off no more upsets with a demolition job and a 5-0 victory.

Thomas McCallum progressed into his second quarters finals in as many attempts with a 5-1 win over Martin Jones. Ryan Fleming defeated Scott Yeaman 5-3, Pat Holtz started to hit top gear with a 5-1 win over Alan Maxwell (Pat doesn’t get called rubsy for no reason). Ross McInnes moved into the next round with a good 5-2 win over Stephen Campbell jnr. Dean Anderson from Dundee showed just why there is so much interest in this young player who has just recently moved over to the SPA from WR with a very good 5-2 win over Paddy McMullen.

Result of the round though went to Paul ‘The Buzzbomb’ McCutcheon who defeated Mark Boyle 5-3. Mark is proving himself to be one of the best players in Scotland and the pool Paul played to defeat him was simply awesome, it was like the Buzzbomb from a few years ago when everything is effortless.

Onto the quarter finals and Paul McCutcheon only got better when he beat Thomas McCallum 5-0 in only a few minutes, it was absolutely flawless pool and there was absolutely nothing Thomas done wrong as he rarely got his hand on the table.

Pat Holtz (pic above) was next to book a semi final place with a 5-3 winner over Alec McDowell. Ross McInnes was next to book a place with a 5-0 win over Ryan Fleming who had a really good tournament.

Scott Ross (pic above) booked the last semi final place and ended Dean Andersons involvement with a 5-2 win, but Dean can go away with the experience under his belt and can only help him continue improving.

The semi final lineup consisted of Ross McInnes vs Scott Ross and Paul McCutcheon playing a team mate in Pat Holtz.

Pat is first to book his place in the final with a devasting display of pool and ran out a comfortable 5-1 winner, and as good a form as Paul was in he didn’t get much chance to show it as Pat kept him away from the table.

The other semi final was a case of Ross making uncharactistic mistakes at crucial times in frames and the scoreline of 5-1 to Scott Ross definitely flattered Scott.

Onto the final (pic of both players above) and Scott Ross was first out the traps with a good finish to take the first frame. Pat quickly leveled the match in the next then Scott took the next 3 frames to take a 4-1 lead. This made Pat go up a gear and reverse dish off Scott’s break and then break and dish to get back within a frame of Scott at 4-3.

Scott then took another outstanding finish to get on the hill at 5-3 before Pat clawed another back. Then Scott got his chance of victory and was taking a very good pressure finish away and missed a very easy second last ball which Pat was not going to refuse the opportunity to level the match.

So match is all tied at 5-5 and Pat to break in the deciding frame, he breaks from the side and after what seems an eternity a couple of balls drop in so he in control of the table, he studies the table to plot his course and takes out a very good finish indeed under immense pressure to take the tournament with a 6-5 win in the final.

Congratulations to Pat Holtz, Corner Pocket Tour 2010 Event 2 Champion.

Would like to thank all the players involved in making the event such a pleasure to run, also like to thank the staff in Hustlers who always make the players feel welcome. Also our thanks to the Corner Pocket for sponsoring the tour and a final thanks to Stevie Walker from Glasgow who helped me on the day keep the tournament running so smoothly.
